How to Make Tulips Last Longer: Professional Tips

¿Como hacer que los tulipanes duren mas? Consejos profesionales - Persa Flores

Tulips are beautiful but notoriously sensitive. With the right care, you can extend a tulip bouquet's life by several days. Here's how florists do it.

Factors That Affect Tulip Lifespan

Sunlight

Tulips do best in bright, indirect light. Direct sunlight speeds up wilting dramatically. Place the vase near a window, not on a sunny windowsill.

Temperature

Cool rooms keep tulips fresher. Aim for around 15–18 °C. Avoid placing them near heaters, radiators, or anything that blows warm air.

Humidity

Dry indoor air can shorten tulip life. If your home is very dry, a small humidifier or just a bowl of water nearby helps.

Care Techniques

Trim the Stems

Cut about 2 cm from the bottom of each stem at a diagonal angle when you receive the bouquet. This helps the tulips absorb water properly.

Remove Submerged Leaves

Any leaves that would sit below the water line will rot and cloud the water. Strip those off before placing the stems in the vase.

Fresh, Clean Water

Change the water every two days. Use cool water — tulips prefer it colder than most flowers.

Extra Nutrients

A small floral preservative extends the bouquet's life. If you don't have one, a tiny pinch of sugar and a drop of bleach in the water is a home-style alternative.

The Tulip's Unique Habit

Tulips keep growing and moving even after they're cut — they lean toward light and tend to droop gently over time. That's part of their charm. Don't mistake it for wilting.
